Mentalization-Based Therapy Training

Mentalization-based therapy training; Often used as a treatment for families, mentalization-based therapy (MBT) is a psychodynamic treatment that focuses on understanding the mental states of others. It is often used to help people cope with intense emotional distress. It is also a powerful treatment for long-term relationship problems and can benefit children. Generally, MBT uses a combination of techniques to help patients better understand the mental states of others.

What is Mentalization-Based Therapy?

Mentalization is a process that allows people to understand others’ thoughts, feelings, and actions. A mentalization-based therapy program is a psychodynamic approach to treating mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder (BPD).This type of treatment is rooted in attachment theory and has been developed by Professor Peter Fonagy at St Ann’s Hospital in London.

In the initial phase of treatment, the therapist and patient work together to explore the patient’s problems and the factors that may be contributing to them. The therapist monitors the patient’s emotional arousal level and makes interpretations to help the patient better understand his or her thoughts. During this phase of treatment, the therapist also explores the patient’s capacity to maintain mentalizing despite challenging interpersonal events. The therapist explores how the patient can use role-playing skills to increase mentalizing.

Mentalization-based therapy training; In the second phase, the therapist explores the patient’s capacity to recover mentalizing when confronted with difficult interpersonal events. The therapist also asks the patient to think about how he or she formulated relational patterns and emotional patterns. During this phase, the therapist also encourages the patient to revise these patterns. This phase also includes using empathic validation maneuvers to help the patient clarify his or her perspective.

The third phase of treatment consists of a weekly MBT group that meets in parallel to the weekly individual therapy sessions. The group meeting is intended to expand the clinician’s perspectives on each patient. The MBT therapeutic stance involves curiosity, patience, and acceptance of the patient’s perspectives. It also allows patients to understand their mental processes outside of therapy.

Mentalization-Based Therapy Training And Courses

This type of training is typically offered as a three-day or online course. The course includes basic training and clinical supervision. In addition, the course includes a packet of worksheets and examples. The packet includes a guide to mentalization-based treatment, a worksheet with examples and questions, and a worksheet with a series of activities that the patient can do.

The course is designed for health professionals, but the Mentalizing Initiative also offers workshops for individuals interested in training in this type of therapy. These workshops include basic, advanced, and adolescence-focused workshops. The course is offered in various locations throughout the NYC or United States.
